Same-sex Heart Transplants Improve Outcome

Are men and women truly different at heart? Perhaps, when it comes to heart transplants. A new Johns Hopkins University study finds that cardiac transplant patients have better odds of survival and a lower risk of rejection if they receive organs from donors of the same sex. Doctors think that heart size is an important factor. Men’s hearts are bigger and have more pumping capacity than women’s. Researchers believe that hormonal and immunologic differences between the sexes may also play a role. However, at this time it is not feasible for every person in need of a heart transplant to be paired with a perfect match – approximately 2,700 Americans are waiting for a heart, but only 2,200 heart transplants are performed annually.

heart transplantation is indicated in many cardiac diseases which we can describe as atermina diseases that may lead to death.in other terms when medical treatment fails. these diseases can be classified into.1.cogenital diseases like fallot tetralogy2-.2.patent ductus arteriosus with shift right to left shunt (eismenger syndrome) 3.diseases of the cardic muscles like cengenital cardiomyopathy .acquired diseases that we all knwow like extesive myocardiac infarction…failed or s.a,node arrythmias.the female oestrogen make the heart more powerful against the ischaiemic events.so my opinion that female heart is preferable than male heart in cardiac transplantation in certian condion but not the all cases. it depends on the primiary lesion and this needs more researhes fo approva.

Sir, I think the best prevention to most cardiac problems is to train. This training in the form of jogging exercises the whole body and the heart. so I entreat people to try to exercise enough to prevent heart diseases rather than curing them in the future.

Richard – the best thing to do would be to speak to your doctor with those questions about organ donation because there are many issues that need to be discussed!

  8. Steven Says:

Dawood – that is a very good suggestion. it’s important to exercise the heart to make it stronger – it is a muscle after all. Exercise also reduces your risk of multiple other diseases like atherosclerosis, high cholesterol, obesity, diabetes, etc.
