Parkinson’s Related To Chemical Exposure

A new study announced today by the American Academy of Neurology suggests that workers exposed to the industrial chemical trichloroethylene (TCE) were five and a half times more likely to develop Parkinson’s disease. Researchers studied 99 pairs of twins in which only one of the twins had Parkinson’s disease. Many of those who developed Parkinson’s had a history of exposure to the chemical through various jobs including dry cleaners, machinists, mechanics or electricians. TCE is a common industrial solvent that is widely used to clean grease off of metal parts. This is the first population study that has demonstrated an association between TCE and Parkinson’s. Previously, only case reports existed. These findings will be presented at the American Academy of Neurology’s 62nd Annual Meeting in Toronto April 10 to April 17, 2010. [via Medical News Today]

Like so many other annoucements of studies, Permissable Exposure Levels (PEL) are never provided unless the authors feel their important to the general public or they are not. This leaves the public to its own imagination which for the most part leads to anxiety. Even OSHA provides PELs for exposer for items under study which leads readers a basis for evaluation of their risks.

I’m surprized to no end that someone hasn’t blamed it on secondhand tobacco smoke.

Parkinson’s is now recognized by the VA as an Agent Orange related Disease. So all related health care is 100% covered for anyone who step one foot in Viet Nam for one minute! Close friend landed at Da Nang for several hours then was transfer same day to Korea due to being a sole surviving son. He later was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2007. All of his Health care has been covered and he has been awarded 100% Disability in excess of $2500.00 a month, tax free. Plus, he is drawing Social Security Disability at the Highest rate(Category #2), with his wife getting half of that to take care of him. Both received back pay of 18 months which was well needed to defray their prior cost before getting into the VA system. Just to bad they didn’t find out about the Va coverage prior.
